WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!
I’m Mia, owner of Ravel & Unravel. I live in a little house in Washington State with my husband & english bulldog. These days I’m all about planning my rose garden & taking lots of textile classes. We keep it pretty mellow over here….
WHAT DO YOU MAKE?
I’m best known for my collection of vibrant knit accessories, but most recently I have been developing a line of hand-dyed and hand-painted clothing to add to Ravel & Unravel. My studio assistant and I make everything, and a lot of my work is limited or One-of- a-Kind because of the way it is produced. All of my knits are made on vintage machines in my home studio, and most of my products’ materials are sourced in the USA from other small businesses like mine.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS MAKER?
I grew up in a very creative family. My parents are both artists as well as my older brother. I never considered any other life really, the examples in my world have always been of artists and creatives making and doing what they love for a living.
WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?
Handmade products are so special - they have a different feeling than anything mass produced. My customers love that my pieces are all crafted individually giving them each their own story. The pattern and color combinations are unique, the materials are thoughtfully and carefully selected, and everything is designed to be comfortable and showcase your individual personality. Everything I make is directly inspired by my friends and specifically made to fill needs & wants in our daily lives making all of my products beautiful and functional.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE
I work alongside an assistant in a tiny room in my house which means it has to have three things, 1) coziness, 2) color, and 3) lots of windows. When we bought our home I chose this room specifically because of all the sunlight that pours into it - it’s a great space to get lost in my yarn! The window that I knit in front of faces my friend’s house and we have developed a sort of sign language for meeting on the patio on nice days after work. I keep four vintage knitting machines (ranging in age from 1901-1990), two sewing machines, and a floor loom for weaving all in the studio, and my dog, Otis, has his own bed under an old industrial knitting machine that is no longer in use.
TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?
You can purchase our products online at ravelandunravel.com, and I have a booth on the craftline at Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market where I sell my work year round. Visit me on Instagram @ravelandunravel for some One- of-a- Kind pieces and a peek at upcoming products.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I grew up just outside of Seattle, WA and I currently live and work in the City of Destiny - Tacoma, WA.
WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?
Literally everything! 2018 has been off to a great start and I am feeling optimistic about what it holds for me. The thing that has me most excited right now is designing and building a new studio space, and hunting for all of the supplies. My husband and I are building it using mostly reclaimed materials which has made it a bit of a treasure hunt. I have also already spent a handful of days in different textile making and other creative workshops because I am always curious about how to make pretty things.
IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I have always been fascinated by metalsmithing. I think it would challenge me creatively in a way I’ve never experienced. There is just something magical about forming lumps and sheets of metal into a piece of jewelry or art.
COFFEE OR TEA?
Coffee (locally roasted, black) in the morning, tea all day long.
ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?
Morning, 100%. I think I used to pretend that I could be a night owl but as I get older I just had to accept that I am not.
WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?
I listen to a variety of music, podcasts, and audiobooks during my day. My favorite podcasts are fictional storytelling and folklore like Lore, Myths and Legends, Tanis, and Levar Burton Reads - I love being whisked away by a good story during my workday.
SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.
- I listen to a ton of different music genres from punk to old country, but one of my all time favorite albums is Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf. Everyone laughs at me when they find out, but I can’t help myself. A lot of my solo knitting is done singing along to Meatloaf.
- I have lived all over the US but I always find my way back to Washington.
- I adore spooky fairy tales. I have loved the old Grimm’s tales since I was little.
- X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Twin Peaks are on constant repeat on my TV. Somehow they never get old.
- I’m a walker. I love long walks and try to get a few hours in a week. Getting lost may be scary for some people but for me it’s my favorite way to find cool murals and old buildings in my city. I also like randomly coming across funky yard art or wild houses - you see more when you walk.
