meet mia of ravel & unravel

WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

I’m Mia, owner of Ravel & Unravel. I live in a little house in Washington State with my husband & english bulldog. These days I’m all about planning my rose garden & taking lots of textile classes. We keep it pretty mellow over here….

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I’m best known for my collection of vibrant knit accessories, but most recently I have been developing a line of hand-dyed and hand-painted clothing to add to Ravel & Unravel. My studio assistant and I make everything, and a lot of my work is limited or One-of- a-Kind because of the way it is produced. All of my knits are made on vintage machines in my home studio, and most of my products’ materials are sourced in the USA from other small businesses like mine.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS MAKER?

I grew up in a very creative family. My parents are both artists as well as my older brother. I never considered any other life really, the examples in my world have always been of artists and creatives making and doing what they love for a living.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

Handmade products are so special - they have a different feeling than anything mass produced. My customers love that my pieces are all crafted individually giving them each their own story. The pattern and color combinations are unique, the materials are thoughtfully and carefully selected, and everything is designed to be comfortable and showcase your individual personality. Everything I make is directly inspired by my friends and specifically made to fill needs & wants in our daily lives making all of my products beautiful and functional.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE

I work alongside an assistant in a tiny room in my house which means it has to have three things, 1) coziness, 2) color, and 3) lots of windows. When we bought our home I chose this room specifically because of all the sunlight that pours into it - it’s a great space to get lost in my yarn! The window that I knit in front of faces my friend’s house and we have developed a sort of sign language for meeting on the patio on nice days after work. I keep four vintage knitting machines (ranging in age from 1901-1990), two sewing machines, and a floor loom for weaving all in the studio, and my dog, Otis, has his own bed under an old industrial knitting machine that is no longer in use.

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

You can purchase our products online at ravelandunravel.com, and I have a booth on the craftline at Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market where I sell my work year round. Visit me on Instagram @ravelandunravel for some One- of-a- Kind pieces and a peek at upcoming products.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I grew up just outside of Seattle, WA and I currently live and work in the City of Destiny - Tacoma, WA.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

Literally everything! 2018 has been off to a great start and I am feeling optimistic about what it holds for me. The thing that has me most excited right now is designing and building a new studio space, and hunting for all of the supplies. My husband and I are building it using mostly reclaimed materials which has made it a bit of a treasure hunt. I have also already spent a handful of days in different textile making and other creative workshops because I am always curious about how to make pretty things.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I have always been fascinated by metalsmithing. I think it would challenge me creatively in a way I’ve never experienced. There is just something magical about forming lumps and sheets of metal into a piece of jewelry or art.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Coffee (locally roasted, black) in the morning, tea all day long.

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

Morning, 100%. I think I used to pretend that I could be a night owl but as I get older I just had to accept that I am not.

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

I listen to a variety of music, podcasts, and audiobooks during my day. My favorite podcasts are fictional storytelling and folklore like Lore, Myths and Legends, Tanis, and Levar Burton Reads - I love being whisked away by a good story during my workday.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I listen to a ton of different music genres from punk to old country, but one of my all time favorite albums is Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf. Everyone laughs at me when they find out, but I can’t help myself. A lot of my solo knitting is done singing along to Meatloaf.

- I have lived all over the US but I always find my way back to Washington.

- I adore spooky fairy tales. I have loved the old Grimm’s tales since I was little.

- X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Twin Peaks are on constant repeat on my TV. Somehow they never get old.

- I’m a walker. I love long walks and try to get a few hours in a week. Getting lost may be scary for some people but for me it’s my favorite way to find cool murals and old buildings in my city. I also like randomly coming across funky yard art or wild houses - you see more when you walk.

meet raney of rane made clothing

WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

I am Raney, or Rane, or Ranes. My family and friends call me all of the above! I am the oldest of 6 kids and the owner and maker of Rane Made Clothing. I have been sewing since elementary school and have been in love since the first stitch. Everything from trimming threads, to fixing my machines gives me life.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I design and make comfortable and easy to wear clothing for women! I intentionally think through each item of clothing to make sure that it will be flattering to the female body and comfortable at the same time!

HOW DID YOU START AS A MAKER?

I started making clothing for myself as a hobby.. I always had a hard time shopping for clothing because I was so picky! I made a few items for myself and started to wear them out. My friends noticed the uniqueness of my clothing right away and wanted to buy them! I began with a few small pop-ups as an experiment and it has all snowballed into my full online and wholesale shop!

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

I personally design each item, cut the fabric from bolts, stitch each seam, and tag every item of clothing myself. Every piece is intentionally crafted and all online orders are made as they come in to prevent overstock waste! I have a small batch of one-of-a-kind items as well that can offer a more unique selection for those who want to have an even more special item!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE!

I currently work out of my home. I have two industrial machines and one domestic. My large cutting table takes up most of my space.

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

I sell all of my permanent designs online at Ranemade.com. I keep a special set of more unique items and my fastest selling stock for markets and pop-ups! I sell at Indie Flea in Tampa, Florida and many others around central Florida! I have a Market Schedule page on my site for local shoppers. I also have a select group of stockists around the country!

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I am born and raised in Lakland, Florida. I have debated leaving a few times.. but I love it here too much! Our community for small business owners and makers here is so special and encouraging.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

There are so many new patterns I have been dreaming about lately.. I am excited to pattern and sew them! Summer holds a whole new rhythm of work for me, so I am looking forward to a busy summer.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would love to learn to throw pottery. I am fascinated with ceramics and have many hand thrown mugs and pieces from maker friends.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Coffee 100%.

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

A night owl for sure! I have been known to work until 2/3 am in my busiest seasons. I don’t sleep in too terribly late, but I enjoy the evenings much more!

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

Either the TV show Friends, or the Office….. My two favorites and I can always picture the scenes in my head. Occasionally I get into ted talks and put those on… When I’m feeling spunky I will jam to some Rap music in the background.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I am the oldest of 6 kids

- I am fifth generation in my home town

- I can crochet

- I am a pianist and singer

- Tacos are my favorite food!

meet juli of hjärtslag home textiles

WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

My name is Juli Böhler. I am the founder and designer of hjärtslag home textiles. I am mother of a one year old boy and live with my boyfriend in Hamburg Sternschanze, Germany.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I make hand knitted home textiles like heavy knitted blankets, decorative pillows and hamper bins.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A MAKER?

After I studied fashion and worked several years in fashion industry, I found myself in need for new creative input and output. So, I started with my best skills: knitting and sewing! First, I came up with an Etsy shop (which I still run successfully). Then I found some retailers to sell my products and I opened my own online shop. The business is still growing and I'm looking forward to what will happen in the future.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

All hjärtslag products are hand knit by myself and two older ladies here in Hamburg. Only high quality wool and Merino yarns from a local yarn mill are used for our super soft and cozy blankets and cushions. The main focus of my production lays in local manufacturing and material sourcing. I always try to make unique knit designs you can't find anywhere else.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE.

As a mom of a one year old baby, I have my workspace integrated in our apartment. One room in our flat is all for myself and my work next to the nursery. At the moment this is the best possible way to be both mother and small business owner.

In a shelf I store yarns and knits I current work on and some magazines. Everything is visible for inspiration. I believe that inspiration comes from things that surround me. So, I keep them in sight. My sewing machine is an old, very old, Singer that I use for everything. It's the best sewing machine I've ever had!

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS.

International customers can find my products on www.hjartslag.etsy.com. All the german speaking people are also able to shop at www.hjartslag.de. We are currently working on an update with english translation for our german website, so please keep visiting us!

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was born in southern Germany. The city is called Freiburg and is located close to the French and Swiss border. Parts of the city center were built in the 13th century, with narrow houses and small alleys. We have mountains and the Black Forest. The weather is warm with lots of sun in the summer and snow in the wintertime. After I finished school, I moved to Berlin to study fashion technology. I really love Berlin and can imagine moving back some day. I've been in Hamburg for 10 years already. The quarter Sternschanze, is absolutely fantastic with lots of restaurants, bars, cool stores and in a very nice neighborhood.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

I feel excited by so many makers and small business owners who are motivating and empowering others. In the beginning of being self employed I often felt dismissed by the fact that I do everything on my own. My work was often minimized as a hobby. Today, this has changed absolutely. More and more people as for local products and handmade things.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Crochet! It's the next thing I'm going to teach myself. Soon, I will have crochet items in my shop.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Coffee! Decaf!

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

I like to stay in bed long, which disqualifies me to be an early bird, I think. I attempt to work in the evening and night time, because I can enjoy working when the baby's in bed.

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHILE YOU ARE MAKING?

I like to watch series like Friends or Big Bang Theory, anything that is easy to follow while concentrating on work. Sometimes I listen to the radio or podcasts as well.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I like to watch Star Trek while knitting.

- I have freckles even in the winter.

- Since I have a baby, I love taking naps.

- I love to rummage through thrift shops for clothing, I rarely buy something new.

- When my boyfriend asks me to watch a movie, I always say "yeah!" Five minutes later, I'm asleep.
