WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

My name is Kate Geisert! I am a pediatric nurse living in Fort Worth, Texas. I am the owner of Mission Paper Company and still can’t believe people pay me to paint and letter on their stuff. It’s unreal. I am also currently in graduate school working on becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Needless to say, I am pretty busy (like everyone else on the planet). I have an awesome support system between my roommates, wonderful boyfriend, supportive friends and fam, and crazy golden retriever pup, George.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I feel like I get to make a little of everything (which I love). I started with art prints and custom pieces… usually with watercolor art and some sort of calligraphy bible verse. I’ve gotten to branch out into greeting cards and wedding invitations. I’ve also done large custom paintings for people and have created custom signs, etc. I feel like I’ve written on just about anything you can think of with a sharpie.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS MAKER?

I was really into art in high school… but paused that life to go into nursing school at TCU (go frogs!). Throughout college I would make art pieces for my friends for gifts, etc. Some of my friends convinced me to open an Etsy shop. Fast-forward to a couple years post-grad, another sweet friend offered to help me open a website and help me develop a lot of ideas. Needless to say, I wouldn’t be anywhere without my friends who are the literal best.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

I wouldn’t say my products are the best. (I’m a great sales-person, huh?). All I am saying is that there is a huge community of crazy-talented artists and calligraphers. I think it is really cool how we all inspire each other and offer a unique style. I do my best to ensure the quality of everything I send out. And I truly pray over each piece. Since my pieces come in small batches, I will say that it’s easier to ensure they all get a little more TLC.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE

My workspace is just a little nook in my house. Right now it is half grad school textbooks and half paint and watercolor paper. It looks like a small bomb went off. But there is a coffee maker and great natural light... really what more can you ask for?

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

Right now my products are exclusively on my website, missionpapercompany.com. I have done some small business markets in the past which are really fun! I plan to do more of those and more pop-ups when I’m post grad school.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was born in California, grew up outside of Dallas, and went to college in Fort Worth. I’ve been in Fort Worth ever since! It’s the best.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

Lots of exciting personal-life changes this year I’m really excited as my own personal art style develops and the new products I want to try out. Also they opened a new Torchy’s Tacos location in Fort Worth so I’m feeling pretty good about that.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I feel really strongly that my next calling is the Olympic figure skating that I’ve been watching on TV. I’ve never actually tried ice-skating but I’m sure it’s not really that hard.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Coffee. Always coffee.

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

Morning person 100%. I love getting up before anyone else with my coffee and my Bible and my pup and just having that time before the sun comes up.

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

Usually worship music. More specifically, Housefires, Elevation worship, and Cory Asbury.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

1. My business was first named “Well Marked” but whenever I said it people thought I was saying “Walmart”. So I changed it. Because I obviously named my business after the grocery store franchise. I mean…. worked for them.

2. I could probably survive off of only Cheetos.

3. My favorite TV shows are The Office and Parks and Rec. Also I get way too invested when I watch Chopped on the Food Network.

4. I am legitimately terrible at all sports. My 5’9” frame is a total waste.

5. I can fold myself to fit into a clothes dryer. Picture proof exists.

meet lana of lana's shop

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

At Lana’s Shop, we make beautiful, hand-illustrated stationery products and paper goods. Our first love, and where we really got our start, was greeting cards. I am and always will be a huge believer in the power of a hand-written note! We also do full custom stationery suites for events, and are always adding new products into our wheel house like art prints, note pads, and even gift wrap! We are lucky enough to work with individual clients, wonderful couples, and some awesome retailers across the country. And we are always dreaming and designing up something new!

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Originally, I’m a New Yorker! I grew up on Long Island and then lived in the big city for several years working in the art department at Vogue magazine. My parents retired to Colorado, and on a trip out west to visit them I met the mountain man of my dreams – and now husband! Since then, we all live in Colorado and I love and appreciate the mountains and this beautiful state more and more every day. But it’s always a treat to get back to (and eat my way around) New York!

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

The anticipation of welcoming our first baby boy in just a few weeks! I designed, painted and printed my first wallpaper for his nursery (potential new product alert!), which was just the right finishing touch on what is now my favorite room in the house! My next project is illustrating a children's book for him. It’s just too much fun!

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

You can find me online at lanasshop.com and on instagram.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The skill of doing one thing at a time, does that count? I'm all over the place. But maybe that's just me, and life feels more exciting with lots of balls up in the air?! But yeah, I am always looking for and open to tips on time management.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Both, please! In our house we make french press coffee every morning and sleepy time tea every night!

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

We always have music (typically the 90's station) playing in the studio while we're packaging orders. But when I'm painting, I usually have my headphones in to focus and some sort of ridiculously awesome Netflix original movie on in the background. That’s the secret guilty pleasure, shh!

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF

- I'm left handed.

- While working at Vogue I once shared an elevator with Vera Wang who stopped to compliment me on my shoes and it was absolutely EVERYTHING.

- Everyone in our family owns our own bowling ball and shoes.

- I’m allergic to/can’t be around unkind people.

- My cat's name was Pizza Party and our dog's name is Lox. I must have food on the brain a lot. Wonder what we'll name our son?!
