WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

Hello! I'm Inge - a painter and photographer based in Brisbane, Australia. I have a husband and three kids, and life is wonderfully full and kinda chaotic at the same time.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I'm an abstract painter plus I do a bit of documentary-style photography.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS MAKER?

I started my journey at art school, after a couple of other unhappily completed science-ish degrees, and fell in love with everything about art—the process and physicality of the making, forming conceptual ideas and being able to have a tangible piece of work at the end of it all. Once I had finished my fine art degree, we moved country and had our second child; with two young kids and life in a new country, I had pretty limited time for making art. As the kids have gotten older, I've had more time to get back into things. Consequently, a few years ago, on a whim I took part in the 100 day project, vowing just to turn up and paint for 100 days straight. I made it through that and haven't really stopped since. I always found it hard to wrap my mind around how to make things 'work' as an artist, and have been so thankful for the way everything has unfolded in a gradual way - turns out I didn't need to know everything at the beginning...

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

I think every artist will turn around and say this, but with each year that passes, my art feels like it becomes more stubbornly and authentically mine, like my voice is growing more clearer and confident. I feel like I'm beginning to be able to block out the noise that social media continually bombards us with and just turn those strange bouts of inspiration I have into art.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE

Its always a mess!! The thing about painting with small people around is that you need to take advantage of those quiet moments as much as you can. If the kids are having a quiet moment then its an opportunity to get into the studio and just get another layer down. So it helps to have everything out and ready to go (that's my excuse anyways). In my current studio, I'm blessed with this wonderful light—it make all the difference when you're painting.

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

You can find my work on Instagram, my website, or at The Artist Room gallery.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I'm originally from New Zealand but have spent time living in Japan, the UK, America and I'm currently living in Brisbane, Australia. Without fully intending it, we've become pretty nomadic!

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

At the moment, everything. Its a bit daunting to be honest. I have so many ideas and plans floating around in my head, I'm afraid that, at some point, some of them are going to fall out of my brain into a pile on the floor. I have multiple series of paintings underway, as well as some exciting photography projects. So, at every opportune moment, I'm working like a crazy lady over here to make all these ideas a reality.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Ceramics or printmaking. I did a introduction to ceramics course a couple of years back and fell head over heels for it. I just love minimalist shapes, beautiful simple glazes and the magic of working in a different medium. I'm pretty terrible at throwing a pot, but dream that one day I'll have a bit more time on my hands and be able practice a bit more (and make pots for all of my plant babies).

COFFEE OR TEA?

Tea. Specifically green. I don't ever drink coffee and have about zero tolerance for it. I reckon I'd have the shakes after one cup!

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

I'm one of those obnoxious morning people who wake up in around 30 seconds and feel well rested regardless of how well/badly I actually slept! But I am a night owl in training - working is easier when the kids are asleep...

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

At the moment, nothing. I don't like to admit that because its incredibly boring - but often I'm working at a time when other people are unconscious so its easier to keep things quiet in order to extend that studio time.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I'm a Star Wars fan. Like, go to the theatre on the day of release kinda fan (not the midnight screening though - because, kids), the 'plan on going to Disneyland when Star Wars land' opens kinda fan, the watch all the films before the new film is released kinda fan. Everyones like that right?! Right?

- Like everyone else in Insta-land, I'm obsessed with plants.

- I'm part Japanese, part German and grew up in New Zealand. I have a major love affair with Japan - it feels so comforting to me and *gah* everything about it is fab. Food, culture, fashion, art. photography...the list could goes on...

- I'm passionate about sustainable, fair trade fashion. When I can steal myself an hour or two away from my art, you'll find me sewing my handmade wardrobe.

- I'm an try-hard gardener. I love growing my own vegetables, but tend to get lazy toward the end of the season and the weeds take over...

WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

I’m Melissa – an artist living and working out of an old stone farm house in Erin, Ontario, Canada

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I create abstract paintings inspired by my natural surroundings and wall hangings created from repurposed barn board, firewood, and bark.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS MAKER?

I was a high school teacher for several years before I began painting. I would say that I was always a creative person, from a musical and artistic family, but I didn’t begin painting till about 10 years ago. A good friend of mine and a very talented artist @kylahkussmannart began painting with me to help guide me through the loss of a pregnancy. I was immediately hooked on the magical feeling that arises from creating a piece of art.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

I feel as though I can say with confidence that my style is completely my own. I have learned to pinpoint the lines in nature and translate this movement into abstract landscape paintings. The wall hangings that I create from firewood and bark are utterly unique as they are created from an invasive species that creates tunnels along the wood and bark. I also ensure that my prices are affordable and that there is a story behind each piece of art.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE

I live in a lovely rural setting in an old stone farm house surrounded vibrant landscapes. My studio is framed by windows looking out onto dazzling golden fields, towering pine trees, a flourishing apple orchard and a natural pond. I embark on daily outdoor adventures with our twin girls and puppy named Mylo, in which we sketch the lines in nature and then warm up by our wood stove and translate our sketches into abstract landscape paintings. My paintings reflect the colours of the seasons, the lines of the hills surrounding our home and the trees dotting the horizon.

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

My website is www.melissamaryjenkinsart.ca I have an Etsy shop called Melissa Mary Jenkins www.melissamryjenkins.etsy.com. I also feature recent work and inspiration on my Instagram page @melissamaryjenkinsart I sell my artwork at @snowberrybotanicals in Erin, Ontario and will be participating in a @westelmtoronto pop up on March 17.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was born in Bancroft, Ontario Canada and grew up surrounded by several lakes and living a rural life. I have lived in several cities and travelled across Canada and Europe but I have now settled in a rural setting and spend my summers in Bancroft on our lake property.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

I am completely and utterly inspired by my natural surroundings and have rediscovered the vibrancy of color in the farm fields, forests and pine trees surrounding our old stone farmhouse.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I have been intrigued by @bookhou punch needle creations and I remember creating pieces as a child. I think it would be neat to relearn and teach this skill to my daughters.

COFFEE OR TEA?

I haven’t had coffee in over 20 years but I am definitely an herbal tea drinker.

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

Lately I have been an early morning person, although not by choice (I have been waking up way too early). If I had my way, I would be a mid-morning person. lol

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

I listen to CBC radio (a Canadian Public Broadcaster) almost all day! I also really love to listen to art and design podcasts.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I used to be a skateboarding instructor

- I sing and play the ukulele

- I used to have dreams about having long luscious hair, but in reality, I have super thin/fine hair that refuses to grow. I have learned to work within my limitations and am currently rocking a half shaved/pixie cut.

- I am obsessed with being near a body of water in the summer and adore all water sports but especially paddle boarding with our puppy named Mylo.

- I am also obsessed with finding treasures in thrift stores, garage sales and the side of the road!

WHO ARE YOU? WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

Hi! I’m Lillian. I’m an artist and textile designer living in Brooklyn, NY!

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I wear a few hats actually. I create hand painted and illustrated artwork for licensing and work with like minded brands on collaborations for the home and fashion industry. I also have line of really fun hand painted leather accessories and handbags.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A MAKER?

I started off as a surface print designer working in the fashion industry for many years before breaking off on my own and producing my own products. I’ve always loved working with my hands and I wanted to start creating products that I felt passionate about. I love painting and working with different materials. My painted leather line started when I merged my love of painting with my love of leather accessories. It felt like a natural progression but there has been a lot of experimentation.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

I offer a unique product that in a sense is wearable art but has durability. I have always invested in leather because it is meant to last so I love working with this medium. I don't take myself that seriously and I try to have fun with designing my products. I love color and funky motifs and I have been known to use accents of glitter here and there. Yes, even on leather!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK SPACE.

My workspace is my favorite place to spend time in. It's not big, its not organized but its a place I can use for inspiration and quiet my mind. Its bright and sunny which is the main reason I feel so inspired working there. I have a large white wall that is Its typically covered with seasonal inspiration images weather that be color chips, paper shapes, photos or fabric pulls. I am a collector of all materials, so when I decided it was time for a studio space I was also excited that all the fabric swatches and colored paper collections had a place to finally live. It makes such a different having all working materials at your fingertips at any given point.

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS.

My leather products can be found on my website www.lillianf.com. I just launch a collaboration with Anthropologie for spring 2018 that includes bedding, wallpaper, travel accessories and throw pillows. Which you can find online and in stores right now! I have a few leather collaborations coming out this summer and one that just launched a few weeks ago with Oh Joy! The hot pink slithering snakes were designed exclusively for the new Oh Joy retail shop.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I’m originally from West Palm Beach, Florida. After graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2007, I moved to New York and have been living here for a little over 10 years now.

WHAT IS MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

I’ve been getting excited to travel more lately! Last year I traveled to Japan and I hoping this year to go to Europe and do a little more exploring. I love finding inspiration in new places and experiencing new cultures and their traditions.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would love to work with glass or glass blowing translate some painted designs onto dinnerware.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Both! I love coffee in the morning to get into the workday but I drink tea all day because I find the hot water helps to keep my day going and stay productive.

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

Morning person :)

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO WHILE MAKING?

I love listening to Jazz music in the studio when I’m feeling upbeat and super productive. On other days I listen to podcasts on science and I love artist interviews.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I’m a 1st generation American! I am ½ colombian ½ Egyptian and speak fluent spanish, not a lot of people know that about me.

- I went to a magnet art school for both middle school and high school.

- I don't have a favorite color (it is just too hard to choose one so I pick a fav color of the month).

- My friends would say I have a strange obsession with aliens or life on other planets and the universe, I think it's normal.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I currently have a thousand irons in the fire but when it comes down to it, I make art. My ultimate goal is to paint full-time and open a gallery/classroom space in Pittsburgh, but in the meantime I offer other creative services - graphic design, photography, and branding being the primary focuses.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and I couldn't be more proud of it.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

Okay, we're getting REAL geeky up in here, but I'm convinced one of my missions in life is to play the game of Survivor, so I've been brainstorming creative ways to get noticed by their casting department. Storyboarding different video ideas has been majorly fun, but there must be better way to stand out than a cool audition video - everyone makes a video! So that is my current side project, coming up with a legendary idea to get on Survivor.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Effective+direct communication. I'm fairly introverted and shy by nature.

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

On my website and on instagram.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Coffee, all day every day.

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

It rotates between reruns of "Friends," various Spotify playlists and podcasts. I've also started listening to audiobooks again, and highly recommend "Molly's Game."

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF:

- My thumbs are two different sizes

- I've played tennis my whole life

- I try to hide a secret message or symbol in all of my paintings

- I've dreamt about being a full-time artist since I was four years old

- Harry Potter is my all-time favorite series and I'm still waiting for my Hogwarts letter.

meet mary-catheryn of copper corners

WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

Hello! I'm Mary-Catheryn! I somehow juggle 3 kiddos under 5, a husband, a home, and a business. All on a daily basis!

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I create big paintings at my studio, Copper Corners.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A MAKER?

Our little family had just moved to a new home and we had big empty walls. For a long time I searched and searched for something, ANYTHING, to fill them but nothing caught my eye nor my heart. Eventually I took matters into my own hands and went to the store to buy some paint and a canvas. This is how my cow was born. I created what I had been searching for. I would love to say that for years I studied and learned art at some prestigious exclusive art school, but my reality is that I come from a long line of humble artists and it simply runs in my blood.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

I create exactly what I would want using the best materials. Every detail, even how I apply the shipping labels on boxes, is done to perfection. Quality artwork on canvas has been known to last around 500 years. This is how long I plan on my pieces being around.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE!

Since I still have 2 kiddos at home, my studio is located in my home. Whenever my studio walls get filled, artwork spills out into the rest of the house, decorating every room. It works out great because we also have a barn where I hand-make all of my frames. And a "gift wrapping room" where I store canvases. I also use the basement/guest kitchen for packaging. Basically, my business has taken over the entire house, ha!

WELL US WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

My artwork can be found at CopperCornersArt.com (starting in February). We are renovating my website, so until it is up and running, I am on etsy as "Copper Corners". I also have a curated collection of artwork at PaintedFoxHome.com

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was a missionary kid, raised in Paraguay, South America. Currently I live in Michigan. A tad different.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

Opportunities. Collaborations. Seeing my business grow and grow much faster than I ever anticipated. Apparently people really appreciate blue and green cows and teal and brown horses. ;)

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I have always wanted to try pottery! I can understand and read Portuguese and Italian but would love to learn to speak them fluently.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Oh man. I wish tea, but its coffee. And not much! Maybe a half a cup a day. Otherwise I get jittery and don't feel good. It's weird, ha!

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

Neither!!! I want to sleep in in the mornings and go to bed early! Is there a category for that???

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

Absolutely nothing. I like to work in complete silence. My house gets kind of crazy with 3 young kiddos running around, so when I get to paint, I like silence to center myself and really focus only on the artwork.

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I am fluent in Spanish and have only ever spoken to my children in Spanish, since the day they were born.

- I met my husband when I was 9. We married at 19.

- I was a Spanish interpreter at a hospital for 10+ years. I did 400+ births. Always so special.

- I am a vegetarian (along with the rest of my family of 5), who goes back and forth with veganism. I just can't bring myself to eat what I paint on a daily basis.

- I can never remember how old I am. 32? 33? 34?
