DESIGNERS WE LOVE - ILLUSTRATION
WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!
I’m Frida - An artist, maker and illustrator
WHAT DO YOU MAKE?
I’m an independent maker, drawing illustrations for fine art prints and creating illustrated ceramics
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS MAKER?
From a young age, I have always had artistic ambitions and a love for creating (perhaps I have my parents to blame for never discouraging me from making a mess as a child). I later went on to study a Visual Arts degree at University, achieving a first class degree and winning a contemporary arts prize. I practiced in sculpture and installation, which was an amazing grounding where I learnt fine art skills and implementation. I have always had a fascination in objects and what they mean to people and after graduating, my outlook on what I wanted to create changed. Rather than exploring concepts behind objects, I wanted to create objects and drawings people would enjoy and would utilise in everyday life.
WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?
I think anything bought from a independent maker is special and knowing someone has put so much love into a handmade product. I think my work is unique as everything is made with my own two hands. Each ceramic piece is a unique item and one-off with no illustration the same. They are all hand built, illustrated and hand painted.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE
I currently work from a little desk located in my house. Behind my iPad drawing or covered in clay!
TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?
I have a website Fridacooper.wix.com/shop and also an Etsy shop Etsy.com/shop/FridaCooper I have also started doing some air fairs so you can check my social media to see which ones I’ll be at this year
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Manchester, a city in England
WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?
It’s such an exciting time at the moment; I am developing my practice all the time! I hope to expand my ceramic line and can’t wait to get making some larger unique pieces in the studio I have been doing night classes in pottery and learning new and exciting skills! I think you never stop learning and I’m always looking for new ways to evolve my creative ideas as a maker. I have been doing some art fairs which I think is such a lovely experience to meet the maker but also for me as the maker, to meeting people who invest in my work is such an invaluable opportunity and so inspiring!
IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Oh that’s a hard question, I’d love to learn about floristry or learn to speck a different language.
COFFEE OR TEA?
I love both ... but If I had to choose think it would be tea! (I guess I am British after all)
ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?
I’m more of a morning person, although in busy periods I do enjoy working throughout the night too!
WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?
I love to listen to Spotify. What ever music I’m in the mood for I can always find a good playlist but some of my favourite artists are Low roar, Rainbow kitchen surprise, Andy Shauf, Haix, Ólafur Arnolds & Slow club.
