WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hi! I’m Stanford. I was named after my grandfather, not the university. For the most part, I like to stay busy. In addition to starting Old City Canning Co., I work full-time during the week and cook at a local homeless shelter. My favorite dog breed is Boxer. And, my favorite flower is hyacinth.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I make scented soy candles. They’re inspired by life. Expect to smell something interesting, not always pretty, but always alluring and thought-provoking.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A MAKER?

Interesting story—I’ll make it quick. I was taking wine classes and needed a better way to learn the various notes and flavors in wine. Instead of purchasing a [very expensive] scent kit, I opted for candle oils. Then decided to go all-in and bought the wax and the supplies. It became an obsession to get the formula right; so after about a year of trial and error, I finally a viable product.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

I choose all of my scents for a reason. If you want a cotton candy candle, you’ve come to the wrong chandler. Most of my scents tell a story, others are inspired by places I’ve traveled or people I’ve met. They also smell great and can easily fill an apartment.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE.

I call it “the chandlery”. It’s a lovely loft space at Jasper Studios in Kensington that was converted from an old carpet factory. Lots of natural light, high ceilings, and charm. It fits my industrial branding perfectly.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

Soon on my website and a few select shopists (like Corduroy!). I plan my growth very strategically. I’d much prefer to have a few great retail partners than have my products in every store in Philadelphia.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I moved to Philly about 5 years ago for law school (yes—I’m a lawyer; please don’t hold it against me) and liked it here so much, I decided to stay.

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

Venturing out into the unknown of starting a small business. It’s like riding a very expensive rollercoaster!

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Play the violin. I took lessons for a while, but it’s so difficult. You can find me at the Kimmel Center anytime a violinist is playing with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

COFFEE OR TEA?

Tea!! Lapsang Souchong in the morning, green in the afternoon, and chamomile at night.

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

Morning definitely. I wake up with the sun, no coffee (or tea) needed, though tea certainly helps (see above).

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO WHILE YOU'RE MAKING?

Lofty, electronic-type music. Think Hotel Costes or Buddha Bar.

WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

I'm Ronnie. I'm from a small town in South Carolina. I recently got engaged to my fiance, John Michael and we currently reside in Hartsville, SC. I've lived in many places over the last years including New England, Philadelphia and New York City. Life and fate brought me back home to SC to be closer to family and to meet my soulmate.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE?

I make hand-poured soy candles using 100% pure soy wax grown from US farmers. I use premium fragrance that are also infused with natural essential oils. My fiance has been super supportive and also helps out as business has picked up a bit lately!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

I've always been obsessesd with fragrances and scented candles and also wanted to create a line of home fragrances for quite sometime now. I once hand-poured 50 candles for the opening of an art gallery opening in Philly and we sold the entire batch that night. I knew then I had "the nose" for it as I call it.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS THE BEST?

Oak 84 candles are the best because I use only the finest soy wax, eco friendly wicks and best fragrance oils on the market. Each candle is personally hand-poured by me or my fiance making each one a little unique. I've tested dozens of fragrance oils and narrowed them down to the ones I thought were the best. The jars I use are also reusuable. After the candle has burned down, you can easily clean the wax out and reuse them as terrariums, coffee canisters or whatever you'd like.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKSPACE.

I work right out of my tiny kitchen at the moment. So it's me, my stove and counter space. Add my fiance, John Michael and our Great Dane, Tiny, into the mix and it can get a little nuts sometimes! I just recently turned our dining room table into a workspace where I put each candle to rest while the soy wax hardens.

TELL US ABOUT WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

We just launched online at Oak84Candles.com. We're currently carried at 3 boutiques here in South Carolina. De Baz, here in Hartsville was the first to pick us up then Sweetgrass Artisan Market in my hometown of Elloree, SC. Also, The Mooing Elephant is owned by an old friend of mine from grade school so she now carries the line including our soy wax melts.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I'm originally from SC. I've literally lived everywhere though! Hartsville, SC is where I currently call home. My fiance & I love it here!

WHAT HAS BEEN MAKING YOU EXCITED LATELY?

I'm really excited, and flattered, so many people have taken such interest in Oak 84. I get pictures almost daily from customers burning their candles, telling me how much they love them! So that makes me excited! It makes me so happy to see other people happy that I've created something they enjoy so much.

IF YOU COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

It would probably learning to knit. My friends have made my hats and scarves for my birthday and Christmas presents and I really wanted to learn. A dear friend of mine owned a yarn store right across from my old apartment in Philly and I never asked for a knitting lesson. How sad is that? There's still time though I suppose!

COFFEE OR TEA?

Coffee, hands down! It's the first thing I put on when my feet hit the floor in the morning.

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

I'm a night owl. I'll be up most nights pouring candles or researching things online for marketing ideas, packaging, etc.

WHAT DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN YOU ARE MAKING?

I usually have a random playlist on. It could be anything from Sia to 80's classics. Lately it's been the soundtrack to the movie "The Greatest Showman". Loved the movie and the soundtrack is amazing!

SHARE 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF.

- I worked backstage at New York Fashion Week. Twice.

- I've gone skydiving once and want to go again!

- I've lived in 4 states over the last 10 years. Philadelphia was my favorite city to live in!
